NOT to watch Rocky films over and over again (although nothing wrong with that!)
The KEY is to instil a mindset of ‘no way out’
No other option
Whatever it takes
Burn the boats
blah blah blah
You get me?
But how to do this?
Well, here’s what I do:
First, I STOP doing things…
> stop checking Facebook all day long (once about 11am and once at 5pm works fine)
> limit screen time (TV, phones, computer apart from working obviously)
> stop snacking and eating crap
> stop drinking fizzy drinks and alcohol
Basically that’s step one - the stop doing list.
Your list can be different, the 'stuff’ isn’t important, it’s making things SIMPLE that matters.
Next, I GET OUT OF MY HEAD…
I imagine that I have a prison guard following me everywhere and making decisions for me.
Got 20 mins free? YOU ARE TRAINING/GOING FOR A WALK
Driving past a supermarket and you need food? YOU ARE GOING IN RIGHT NOW AND BUYING HEALTHY FOODS (otherwise I get hungry, have no food to hand and end up eating shite)
Don’t want to go heavier on your squats? TOUGH SHIT, I MAKE THE RULES AROUND HERE
Probably gonna get sectioned for sharing that
BUT it really does work.
1) Stop doing useless shite
2) Stop making the decisions
3) Start having a tough alter-ego mindset that forces you to do the right thing - which is always the hard thing.
I see the gym as a place to recharge this ‘caveman mode’ mindset
It’s a purpose to train and practice for (do your hip stretches to get better at squats, and cos you know your coach will call you out if you don’t!)
And most of all, it’s a community of people behind you
At least, the way we do it, training as teams, private sessions, progressive program etc.
